Pupils have produced a range of colourful handmade teddies, thanks to a collaboration between volunteers at Knitting Mania and Kirkton Services in Barrhead.
Knitting Mania is a Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire (VAER) intergenerational initiative which matches older volunteers with a group of primary school children. Over six weeks, older volunteers teach pupils the art of knitting whilst building relationships between the school, pupils and older volunteers within the community.
The overall project aim is to encourage younger and older people to work together, share experiences, learn together and build relationships. It also aims to promote better understanding and respect, and dismantle the stereotype images of one generation to another.
Harry Balch Volunteer Development Worker at Voluntary Action East Renfrewshire (VAER) says;
"The project provides a fantastic opportunity for the younger generation to learn valuable life skills from our older volunteers. The level of demand at Our Lady of the Mission allowed us to team up with older volunteers at Kirkton Services to run knitting sessions for 12 pupils. The students were fantastic and clearly delighted with their teddies at the end of the project."
The sessions at Our Lady of the Mission are a progression from the highly successful collaboration between Alzheimer Scotland, St Joseph’s Primary School and residents at Hawthorn Court earlier in the year. The group knitted over 1,200 squares that were made in to 12 blankets as part of a world record attempt at Inverary Castle on June 23rd, 2012. The resulting blanket measured a staggering 914 sq meters! Nearly double the original world record.
