The majority of homes in East Renfrewshire will receive two new wheeled bins as part of the new three-weekly collection service which starts in the first week of October - a blue one for paper, cardboard and cartons and a green bin for plastics, glass and cans.
And it means residents will be able to recycle more waste at home than ever before - such as empty aerosol cans, clean aluminium foil, cardboard boxes, egg boxes and bulky cardboard and cardboard lined cartons - thanks to the bins’ much greater capacity than the bags and boxes previously provided.
Other items which can be recycled in the bins include clean:
• Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
• Fruit and veg punnets
• Glass bottles and jars
• Food and drinks cans
• Cereal boxes and ready meal sleeves
• Greeting cards, paper and envelopes
• Brochures and magazines, junk mail and flyers
• Toilet and kitchen roll tubes
Whilst the new bins are being rolled out the non-statutory large item collection (bulky uplift) service will be temporarily suspended. It will start again on Wednesday 5 October.
The service overhaul sees an end to the current bag and boxes collection system.
As it will be easier for people to recycle much more of their household waste, there will be a reduction in the amount of rubbish disposed of in grey bins, meaning they will need to be collected less often.
The two new bins along with residents’ grey bin for non-recyclable waste will be collected on a three weekly rotation. There will be no change to the brown bin service with food and garden waste continuing to be collected every week.
The three weekly collection will put East Renfrewshire in line with the services provided by other councils across Scotland.
The changes have been developed in direct response to feedback from residents about difficulties with the bag and box service and will lay the foundation for the council to meet the new national Charter for Household Recycling guidance.
During periods of stormy weather residents have frequently contacted the council to highlight that bags and boxes are not suitable for extreme weather conditions, as they blow away from their properties.
In 2015 East Renfrewshire recycled 56.8 per cent of all local household waste. But 20,000 tonnes of waste still went to landfill. It is estimated that 15 per cent of this material could be recycled.
