Inspired by local children the colourful play area is part of a £3million investment in Rouken Glen.
Youngsters from local schools and their parents gave their views on what the ultimate play area should look like. And this helped influence the final design.
To make the playground inclusive it has equipment for wheelchair users to enjoy and a multisensory zone.
The centre piece is a pirate ship with a seven metre tall bird’s nest tower. Other features include two 30m long zip wire racers, a climbing wall, a train, swings, slides, a tunnel, a roundabout and a trampoline.
The play area has different zones referring back to Rouken Glen’s boating pond and woodland walks. And there is a dedicated toddler area, all inclusive central play zone for juniors, a quiet zone, a climbing and swingalong zone and a landscaped play zone.
Staff from Isobel Mair School, East Renfrewshire Disability Alliance and East Renfrewshire Access Panel also helped influence the playpark designs.
Councillor Vincent Waters, East Renfrewshire environment convener said: “I’m delighted that our fantastic new play area is open in time for children and families to enjoy during the summer holidays. We worked with parents and youngsters to deliver the ultimate play area. It was important to us to create an inclusive playground and the area has been designed to be accessible for all with more than 25 pieces of equipment which includes equipment for wheelchair users to enjoy, a dedicated toddler area and a multisensory section. This further investment in Rouken Glen Park is part of the £3million Parks For People investment programme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and East Renfrewshire Council.”
Stuart Wetherell, sales director of Wicksteed Playgrounds who designed the play area said: “Wicksteed Playgrounds are delighted to have been part of the extensive transformation at Rouken Glen Park, no more so than our area sales manager, Angus Mackintosh who grew up in the area and visited the park on many occasions as a child. By incorporating play, fitness and inclusive elements into the site we hope that the whole community can enjoy the newly refurbished park for many years to come.”
