Rouken Glen Park is gearing up to host The Highland Games 2013.

The event, organised by East Renfrewshire Council, will take place on Saturday 20 April.

And it once again offers a packed programme of entertainment, with something for all the family.
Among the popular attractions will be the traditional heavy events, with professional athletes competing for the honours.

These include the caber toss, hammer throw and shot putt.

Entertaining the crowds alongside will be traditional pipe bands and highland dancing competitions.

And this year for the first time there will be an international women’s highland challenge, with highland events and strength challenges.

Eight international female athletes will compete in a range of events. They include Anett ven der Weppen of Germany, who was runner-up in the World’s Strongest Woman competition.

Male highland stars set to take part include East Ren men Gregor Edmunds, who is World Highland Games champion and Braemar champion, and Daniel Carlin, who is Scottish and English under-23 shot putt champion.

Also featuring on the day will be the ever-popular women’s welly-throwing contest, children’s entertainment and activities, farmers’ market, historical re-enactment, food stalls and an arts and crafts fair.

Chieftain for the Highland Games will be Provost Alastair Carmichael.
He said: “It’s always a terrific spectacle.

“The event offers something for everyone, and both competitors and spectators are sure to have a fantastic time.

“The Games are a very important part of our events calendar and Rouken Glen Park is the perfect venue for them.”

Entry is free of charge and the event begins at Rouken Glen Park at noon.
